Caye Caulker

A perfect place for a vacation..

Caye Caulker is a tropical island paradise where you can be as active or relaxed as you wish. The sandy, palm clad island is eight miles long, split into two unequal parts. In places, the island is less than half a mile wide, meaning that you are never far from the crystal clear blue sea, making it a perfect base for water activities. Snorkeling is especially popular here as we are less than a mile from the Barrier Reef, rewarded by its beauty and protection. We are centrally located amongst many marine reserves for which Belize has become well known and you can see a huge variety of marine life. Please note that it’s because of the reef’s proximity to Caye Caulker, that sand doesn’t build up into large areas on the beach. We have a beach (and plenty of palm trees) but it is narrow. Sunbathing on docks and in hammocks is very popular though! Snorkeling from the docks or swimming out to the reef independently is discouraged, partly to protect tourists in this busy boat lane, and also to protect the marine life from the inexperienced and curious. You can swim at the ‘split’ but this does have a strong current and again be aware of the boats. You will see the occasional stingray or fish from the docks, but of course you’ll see far more on our tours to the reef!

Easy going people...

The village is home to around 1500 people, who primarily make their living from Tourism and Fishing. Despite all the tourist amenities, the island has retained its unique charm. An intoxicating mix of Caribbean and Latin American cultures, the feel of the island is laid back, and a perfect place for a vacation. Tourists here vary more widely than in the rest of the country; from families, couples, and singles, and backpackers to weekend vacationers, family holdays and those who become residents. We have tourists from all over the world.

A place to call home for a while..

Accommodation is available from US$10 a night dormitory style, through simple clapboard hotels (with either fans or air conditioning), right up to 4 to 5 Star luxury condos at over US$100 a night, and really provides a choice for everyone. Red Mangrove can give general advice on finding accommodation, but we don’t work directly with any hotels.

The rest of Belize...

Caye Caulker is also a great base for day trips to the mainland. You can go cave tubing, zip lining, visit the wonderful (and conservationally- minded) Belize Zoo, or the ancient Mayan cities of Altun Ha and Lamanai. We can arrange all of these for you, or help you to visit other parts of this amazing country or elsewhere in the region. You are welcome to use our reference books and maps to plan your trip, and we sell guidebooks, nature books and animal and fish guide cards.

Happy Travelling!
